The Université de Montréal Staircase

Masonry

As part of the reconstruction of the monumental staircase located at the tower of l’Université de Montréal, Expertise Laser 3D – iSCAN collaborated with Robert Hardy Maçonnerie.  The goal of the project was to produce a 3D measured drawing of the staircase that would allow stone numbering on the CAD drawings for the mason.

The staircase was then methodically dismantled to preserve the integrity of the stones and to facilitate repositioning them in their original place after the reconstruction.

The major challenge for this project was to generate an ultra-precise scan of the stairs without removing a carpet glued to the steps in the middle of the stairway. Some activities organized by l’Universite de Montréal needed the carpet in place. By placing precise reference points in our analysis, the stone numbering process and the whole staircase documentation was then feasible, including the carpet area.
